The drive from the Gyirong border post to Kathmandu was a horrible experience. The Tibetan side was great but the Nepali side…..
This year has had tons of monsoon rains and the road has washed out numerous times. Many have died this year. For those who have driven with me – I am a notoriously bad passenger and I hate heights. A bad combo. We were told the drive was 6-7 hours and it took 12+. Four hours were spent watching a bulldozer and two front end loaders rebuild a road that just had a landslide. Real good for my spirits – all I knew was I did not want to be first on the new road….
To top it off 3-4 hours were now in the dark due to the delays. I was a mess, plain and simple! M.C. tried to take photos but they don’t do it justice. The video above is similar but picture numerous waterfalls and lots of pieces of road just gone. And then multiply by 100…..
After more tortuous roads in the daylight, it got dark I had thought we were near Kathmandu until we started going up again, and up, and up and up! I was apoplectic! Finally we saw an incredible sprawl of lights down below and we started into the big city. By the time we got to my friend Woodys beautiful apartment, we were all done. Bring on a few days of R &R….
Absolutely terrifying! Did you manage to hold your shit together for the sake of not freaking out the kids?! That bus which says DELUXE on the video looks completely out of control
No I was a mess….
